Hi, my name is Catherine Worthington and I am a textile/ fiber artist ,fabric designer and artist mentor. I live in Brunswick where I create textile art quilts from my home studio. My work has been exhibited throughout Maine in galleries and art shows. The inspiration for my work comes mostly from nature with it’s natural beauty, color, patterns and texture. I work in several processes first creating my fabrics using textile paints on canvas or cotton incorporating a variety of surface design techniques. I then collage the fabrics together to make a composition that will often start with just a few strips of color. When I am satisfied with the composition I then machine quilt the pieces using free motion stitching which allows me to draw with my sewing machine. I use various colors and types of threads and often add hand stitching or embellish with embroidery floss to add even more detail. I am drawn to the sea and the creatures that live there and also abstract landscapes, seascapes and sunsets in which I try and create a feeling or a familiar place for the viewer to escape. More recently I have been inspired by flowers, fruits and gardens. I enjoy my process and creating art and hope you will too.
I am currently working on some new pieces getting ready for a show at Gallery Framing in Brunswick in March 2010. My newest art quilt has tulips and other flowers. It is made from hand painted fabric using textile paints, pieced, machine and hand quilted.
